Lil’ Gay Out makes a triumphant return to support rainbow youth

A group of Macleans College students recently joined more than 250 secondary school students from across Auckland (Tāmaki Makaurau) at Lil’ Gay Out, a vibrant event celebrating inclusion, connection and community.

The day provided rainbow and takatāpui students, along with their allies, with opportunities to learn, share experiences and build supportive networks.

Hosted by Te Kunenga Ki Pūrehuroa Massey University, the programme featured interactive workshops, inspiring guest speakers and live performances in a welcoming environment.

Students explored a wide range of topics throughout the day. Workshops covered queer community history, creating inclusive school cultures, cosplay and self-defence. Local drag artists Hugo Grrl and Miss Geena also delivered lively performances that were enjoyed by attendees.

A panel discussion provided an opportunity to hear from Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr Tere McGonagle-Daly, MP Chlöe Swarbrick and Hāmiora Bailey, former Director of Auckland Pride. The panel shared thoughtful perspectives on navigating intolerance, understanding local queer history and managing anxiety. Their insights were well received by students representing 25 Auckland secondary schools.

Lil’ Gay Out made a welcome return this year at the new venue after not being held last year. The event once again provided students with a welcoming space to connect, learn and celebrate diversity.
