Posted on June 22, 2026
From traditional arts and games to international cuisine and cultural performances, International Languages Week gave Macleans College students the opportunity to explore the many ways language connects people, cultures and communities.
The week featured a range of interactive experiences that celebrated both linguistic learning and the diversity of the school's global community.
Students studying languages took part in activities beyond their regular classroom learning, while the wider school community was invited to experience different cultures and traditions.
Highlights of the week included:
- Chinese chess
- Chinese ink painting
- Traditional Japanese games
- An Aikido workshop
- Flamenco workshops and performances
- A presentation from former student Brooklyn Burns (Hillary House 2022 - 2024) about her year-long exchange experience in Argentina
- A languages treasure hunt
- Food trucks featuring cuisine from around the world
- The school flag pageant
At the heart of International Languages Week was a celebration of the role languages play in communication, connection and relationship-building. Learning another language can build confidence and communication skills, strengthen memory and listening abilities, enhance problem-solving and critical thinking, and foster greater cultural awareness and empathy.
The week also highlighted the close relationship between language and culture. Language is more than a tool for communication. It offers insight into different perspectives, traditions and ways of life. By learning another language, students gain a deeper understanding of others and a broader appreciation of the world around them.
International Languages Week also celebrated the diversity of the Macleans College community. Students and staff from many cultural backgrounds contribute to a vibrant and enriching school environment. The week served as a reminder that language and culture help build understanding, strengthen connections and foster a sense of belonging.
Macleans College extends its sincere thanks to Mr Chai, Dane Mitchell, Ivan Neziri, Ian Harris, Alfonso Atienza and Brooklyn Burns for sharing their expertise and helping to enrich students' experiences throughout the week.
