Former student embarks on cardiology career in the United States

Former Macleans College student Tom Wang (Rutherford House 2002 – 2005) has been appointed as a specialist cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, United States.

Tom (MBChB, MD, FRACP, FACC) is based in the Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and Section of Cardiovascular Imaging. Cleveland Clinic has been ranked as the top cardiology/cardiac surgery hospital in the United States for 27 consecutive years and the second overall hospital by US News & World Rankings. In the Newsweek World’s Best Hospital list, Cleveland Clinic ranked number one in cardiology and number two overall.

In his final year at Macleans College, as a Year 12 student, Tom achieved an NZQA Premier Scholarship, including being the top scholar in Chemistry, third in Calculus and he achieved Outstanding Scholarships in Statistics/Modeling and Physics. Tom also achieved Top in the World awards in A Level Physics and Further Mathematics, and Top in New Zealand in AS Biology. Tom earned a bronze medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Upon leaving Macleans College Tom studied the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Auckland, graduating as a Senior Scholar. In 2018 he completed his cardiology specialist training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians across the three Auckland regional hospitals. After six months working as a cardiologist at Middlemore Hospital, Tom undertook the two-year advanced cardiovascular imaging fellowship at Cleveland Clinic to become an expert in echocardiography (testamur), cardiac CT (board certified) and cardiac MRI (board certified), before being offered the full-time staff cardiologist position which he has just taken up.

Alongside his clinical work as a cardiologist, Tom is passionate about cardiovascular research. To date, he has published over 130 articles in peer-reviewed journals, several book chapters, and has given over 200 presentations at national and international conferences. In 2019 he completed his MD research doctorate degree with the University of Auckland.

Tom has won multiple awards from the Cardiac Society of New Zealand, Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Surgery, American College of Cardiology and Cleveland Clinic. He has also received grants from the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, National Heart Foundation of New Zealand, Auckland Medical Research Foundation and European Society of Cardiology.
