Year 13 Macleans College student Archie Thompson (Batten House) continues to make his mark on the golf course, adding another significant achievement to an already impressive sporting résumé.
Last month, Archie won the North Harbour Golf Open Men’s Stroke Play Championship with a superb seven-under-par performance. The victory earned him his first points in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), an important milestone for any aspiring golfer. His success also secured selection in the Auckland Golf senior amateur provincial 10-man team.
A School Prefect, Archie balances his academic responsibilities with a demanding sporting schedule. He is a member of both the Macleans College Premier Golf team and the Boys' 1st XI Football team.
As co-captain of the Premier Golf team, Archie recently helped lead Macleans College to victory in the Auckland Secondary Schools Golf Championship. The team will travel to Christchurch in August to compete in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Golf Championship.
Archie's rise in the sport has been rapid. Since taking up golf in 2022, he has made impressive progress and continues to build a strong competitive record.
A member of Pakuranga Golf Club, Archie set a new club record last year during the men's championships, finishing 18-under-par across four rounds.
The 2026 season has already produced a string of outstanding results. Archie finished runner-up in the Auckland Men's Stroke Play Championship at Remuera Golf Club. He also claimed runner-up finishes in the North Shore Classic, Northland Stroke Play Championship and Waihi Open. In addition, he placed third in the Taranaki Men's Stroke Play Championship and tied for sixth at the Australian Junior Boys Amateur Championship in Victoria.
His strong form follows an equally successful 2025 campaign. Archie finished third at the New Zealand Boys Under-19 Championship in Wellington, third at the North Island Under-19 Championship in Taupō and was runner-up at the Waikato Boys Under-19 Age Group Championship.
With a current handicap of +3.1 and a growing list of achievements at regional, national and international level, Archie continues to establish himself as one of New Zealand's most promising young golfers.
