Unprecedented results for Macleans College Premier Debating

Posted on October 04, 2021

Last week the Macleans College Premier Advanced Debating Team 1 advanced to the Auckland Schools Debating grand finals.

The team of Abhinav Chawla (Snell House), Ellen Wang (Snell), Wei Tian Teo (Rutherford) and Judy Fong (Snell) competed against Auckland Grammar School Team 1 for first place in the Premier Advanced Division.

This was a huge achievement for the team, as it was the first time Macleans College had made it to the grand finals. Forty competitive teams from schools all over Auckland participated. Unfortunately, the round had to take place over Zoom due to the lockdown, but the team persevered, eventually emerging as the runner-ups to Auckland Grammar School, losing by a close margin.

Additionally, the top 10 speakers of the competition were acknowledged in the prizegiving ceremony that followed, with Wei Tian Teo placing 10th as one of the two year 12s that placed, Judy Fong coming 8th, and Ellen Wang at 6th.

Thank you to Mrs Glasgow-Palmer for her continued support of the debating teams.
