Seaweek Cleanup 009

Eighty students from five local schools, along with teachers and parents assisted in a beach clean-up organised by the Macleans College Enviro Group on Saturday 2 March.

The initiative was organised as part of Seaweek. It highlighted the importance of our seas, oceans and waterways. The students were able to collect a large quantity of small plastic objects and fragments along the local beach. These micro-plastics are most dangerous to sea life as they are easily mistaken for food and can enter the food chain, choke and even kill organisms.

The students were astounded by the variety of waste material found on the beach. They also participated in a Marine Meter Squared activity to count living organisms in a small area and, once their observational skills were focussed students were pleasantly surprised at the variety of living creatures to be found on the beach.
