The staff and students of Rutherford House had the pleasure of recently hosting a special visit from Hato Hone St John, Rutherford House’s chosen charity.

Hato Hone St John is a trusted charity that provides ambulance services, first aid training, event medical services and community programmes across New Zealand.

During House assembly on Tuesday 9 April, Stephen Robinson shared the history of St John, which extends back to approximately 1070. The history of St John is one of the oldest service organisations in the world. Monks in Jerusalem originally established St John as a hospice - a place of care - for anyone regardless of their background or religion.

Approximately $4,000 worth of money raised from Rutherford House’s recent Valentine’s Day roses and Atomic Kiwi carnival fundraiser was delivered to Hato Hone St John during this assembly.

During school lunchtime, Hato Hone St John kindly offered to drive one of their ambulances to the grounds in front of Rutherford House to allow students to explore its interior. The ambulance was equipped with various first aid equipment and a stretcher, on which students could briefly lie on a stretcher or simulate an experience of working as an ambulance responder.

Through Hato Hone St John’s visit, students were able to learn more about their whānau house charity and form a strong, positive relationship with it. It was also a valuable event for all Rutherfordians as they learnt about the role of an important group in the community and the health care sector who are urgently needing more paramedics, officers and volunteers.

Many students felt a sense of pride and contentment in supporting such a crucial and valued group. Hato Hone St John’s visit also provided inspiration to students who are interested in a related career pathway.
