Representing New Zealand, Year 13 student Mandy Jing (Batten House) achieved a silver medal at the Australasian Economics Olympiad held in Sydney.

During the July holidays, Mandy, alongside four other high school students, travelled to Sydney to compete in the inaugural Australasian Economics Olympiad.

The competition consisted of an individual component (an economics theory exam) and team component (addressing a ‘real-life’ economic problem). Each team was tasked with the challenge of evaluating the current scenario and preparing and presenting the policies they would advise their government to implement to improve outcomes in this area. The competition was hosted by the University of New South Wales and participating teams had the rare opportunity to visit the Australian Treasury and the Reserve Bank and listen to and meet a range of economists working there.

The New Zealand team earned silver for their strong performance in the team event. The team put together a cohesive and convincing package of policies, supported by data from studies conducted around the world.

Mandy’s success is reflective of the strength of economics at Macleans College. Many thanks to support provided by Mrs Ladkoo and Mr Jacob Samuel of King’s College for leading the New Zealand Economics Olympiad team.
