Macappella and Sinopia Take Regional Barbershop Honours

Posted on June 25, 2018

Three Macleans Barbershop groups took to the stage at this year’s Barbershop regional competition, held at Birkenhead College on Friday 22 June.

Led by Melody Lowe, the Macleans Barbershop Chorus Macappella, gave an energetic and precise performance that received an appropriately rousing ovation from their competitors and other audience members.

The judges, also impressed, scored Macappella well above their nearest competitor, naming them Auckland regional chorus champions for the eighth consecutive year.

Competing for the first time in the quartet category, the Gold Quartet, featuring Diego Santos (Rutherford House), Daniel Woo (Hillary), Avaneesh Belwalkar (Rutherford) and Jonathan Shaw (Batten) gave an admirable performance in the men’s division.

Also taking top honours were Sinopia, featuring Hayatt Al Joborry (Mansfield), Jackie Liu (Snell), Shuyi Wang (Snell) and Danielle Tweedale (Rutherford).  The girls wowed the audience with their stylish and controlled performance, scoring them a mark higher than that of the under 25’s category of the competition.

Macappella and Sinopia will now compete in the national final event to be held in Tauranga in September.
