Gold fleet spot achieved at New Zealand Secondary Schools Team Sailing Championships

Posted on May 02, 2023

The Macleans College racing sailing team were one of 28 schools competing in the 2023 New Zealand Secondary Schools Team Sailing National Championships.

Held at Algies Bay, there were consistent strong onshore winds throughout the week which saw racing on Monday and Tuesday cancelled. The race committee made the decision to abandon sailing in the waters off Algies Bay due to dangerous weather conditions and all racing was moved to the more sheltered bays under the hills of the Tāwharanui Peninsula.

With only three days left to complete racing, the team knew it would be a short regatta with two or three round robins. Macleans College dominated their first round robin winning eight out of nine matches and finishing top of the silver fleet. This strong performance secured the team a spot in the hotly contested gold fleet for the remainder of the regatta.

Macleans College won a few races in the gold fleet, justifying their position amongst the best schools in the country. At their first nationals as a team, Macleans College finished the regatta ninth overall. With substantial learnings and tight racing, the team is elated with their result and expectations were well and truly exceeded.
