Geographic research collected at Muriwai Beach

Posted on April 10, 2024

Year 13 Macleans College geography students from both the NCEA and CIE pathways recently visited Muriwai Beach.

NCEA students gathered data to support or disprove their hypothesis for their geographic research report, while CIE students engaged with the coastal environment to better understand their study of coastal processes.

Favourable weather conditions allowed the students to undertake a range of geographical techniques including longshore drift measurements and beach profiles. The students were lucky enough to have a strong onshore wind, supporting the geographic theories that students had covered in class.

Unfortunately the gannet colony viewing platform was still closed due to the damage caused during Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023. However, students were able to view Otakamiro Point from below while on Muriwai Beach and at Maori Bay.
