Year 12 Biology students visit the rocky shore at Kawakawa Bay

Year 12 NCEA Biology students recently visited the rocky shore at Kawakawa Bay to explore the rock pools and investigate how different species thrive in the zone between high and low tide.

The student biologists were fortunate enough to see lots of fish, anemones, seaweeds, sea stars and even an octopus.

Clambering over rocks, the students examined the specific adaptations that different marine plants and animals have that allow them to survive the harsh conditions that go with regular periods of exposure to air during low tide, the battering effects of the wind and waves, and vulnerability to predators. Students then used a transect line to collect field data for use in their assessment report.

The beautiful autumnal day was finished by enjoying hot chips on the beach and admiring the nearby islands of the Hauraki Gulf.
