Students create unforgettable memories on Japanese exchange

For two adventurous Macleans College students, the opportunity to spend two months in Japan as part of a school exchange program was a life-changing experience.

Immersed in a new culture, language and way of life, Alicia Kao (Mansfield House) and Adrian Chen (Hillary) embraced every moment. This journey not only broadened their horizons but also deepened their Japanese language skills.

Alicia and Adrian share their experiences below.

Alicia Kao

“Applying as an exchange student to Ritsumeikan Uji Senior High School has proven to be one of the best decisions I have made in my life. Over eight weeks I gained numerous valuable experiences and created long-lasting memories. The warmth and friendliness of everyone at the school made it easy for me to embrace school life.

Experiencing Christmas and New Year in Kyoto was one of the highlights. Not only did it offer an opportunity to witness the Japanese traditions and celebrations of both festivals, but I was also able to improve my Japanese language skills. I’m incredibly grateful to the International Center at Ritsumeikan Uji High School for offering Japanese language classes and cultural trips that have expanded my understanding of both Japanese language and culture. Participating in this exchange program has allowed me to form meaningful friendships and unforgettable memories.”

“A highlight of my time at Ritsumeikan Uji Senior High School was the school project set by Mr Mizuguchi (水口先生). Exclusive to international and exchange students, we were encouraged to brainstorm ideas on how to attract more tourists to the Japanese city of Uji. We were tasked with interviewing local residents on the street during a field trip to Uji, to understand more about the distinguishing features and characteristics of the traditions of Uji’s “Sado” (tea ceremony).

The teachers at Ritsumeikan Uji Senior High School organised a number of other field trips to immerse ourselves in the culture and scenery of Nara. We visited historic Japanese style structures such as the Todaiji Buddhist temple and the Kasuga Taisha Shinto shrine.

I’m overwhelmed with joy and fulfillment when reflecting on my participation in this exchange. I had the opportunity to do things that aren’t possible in New Zealand, such as communicating in Japanese with local Japanese people.

I encourage Japanese language students to consider the exchange program. In addition to the experience, you also greatly improve your Japanese language skills as you put them to practical use for two months.”
