The Little Mermaid: enchanting and delightful

Posted on May 11, 2023

Close your eyes in the Colin Prentice Auditorium recently and it would have been easy to imagine yourself - in the immortal words of the musically gifted crab, Sebastian - ‘under the sea’.

The 2023 Macleans College musical, The Little Mermaid offered audiences the opportunity to be swept away in a current of magic, drama, music and dance that is the Disney classic.

Students from Year 9 to 13 made up the fantastic cast and crew of skilled singers, actors, dancers, musicians, stagehands, costumes, make-up and props needed to produce such a slick version of the well-known, and highly anticipated show. Under the leadership of Ms Burnett and Dr Miles (Director and Musical Director respectively), the team produced an incredible season that delighted audiences young and old.

As Ariel, Sophia Askin’s (Batten House) captivating performance in the lead role (her first lead role at Macleans College) gave an insight into her talent as both actor and singer, Sophia was ably matched by Quinn Bevan (Te Kanawa) who played the land-based love interest of Prince Eric and reinforced the depth of talent in the performing arts department. A special recognition for both Lexie Buchanan (Upham) and Faithfulness Saumani (Kupe) for their outstanding performances as the Sea Witch, Ursula, and the charismatic Caribbean Crustacean, Sebastian.

With a run of completely sold out shows, The Little Mermaid is sure to be remembered as something that enchanted and delighted. And, for audiences, a chance to be ‘part of that world’.
