National selection for Macleans College at Shakespeare Festival

Posted on May 06, 2026

Macleans College celebrated strong results at the Auckland South and East Regional Shakespeare Festival, which it hosted at the end of Term 1.

The school entered four student-directed groups.  Performances included a neon-inspired 1980s interpretation of Romeo and Juliet and a boardroom adaptation of King Lear.  Mila Sutch’s (Hillary House) interpretation of Hamlet earned selection for the National Festival.  The piece explored the impact of manipulation on a young Ophelia, portrayed by Sheridan Griffiths (Te Kanawa).  The group will travel to Wellington to compete over King’s Birthday weekend.

At the regional festival, one student is selected for direct entry into the National Shakespeare Schools Production (NSSP).  Dani Gonzalez Castro (Mansfield) was chosen from more than 100 performers across seven colleges for the most outstanding performance.  Dani will attend a nine-day Shakespeare workshop, with the opportunity to be selected for further study in England.  This marks the second consecutive year Dani has received this honour, an achievement that is rarely attained.
