Macleans College marks Samoan Language Week with pride and purpose

Posted on June 24, 2026

The sounds of Samoan language, song and celebration echoed across Macleans College earlier this month as students, staff and whānau came together to mark Samoan Language Week.

The week provided an opportunity to honour Samoan culture and identity while recognising the important role that family, community and heritage play in shaping young people.

Macleans College proudly joined schools and communities across Aotearoa New Zealand in recognising and celebrating the richness of Samoan language, culture and identity.

This year's theme, 'E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nu'u – From the high mountains are the blessings of the village', highlights the strength that comes from the foundations laid by our ancestors, families and communities. It reflects the importance of belonging, resilience and supporting one another to thrive.

The week featured the annual flag-raising ceremony and a special assembly performance by Gladness Saumani (Kupe House), showcasing the pride and vibrancy of Samoan culture. Although Macleans College's Samoan student group is small in number, its members continue to make a valuable contribution to school life through their enthusiasm, leadership and cultural pride.

The week also included Macleans College’s annual annual Māori and Pasifika Whānau Hui. Holding the two events alongside one another created a valuable opportunity to strengthen connections with whānau while recognising the diversity of our school community.

Macleans College extends its thanks to the many Māori and Pasifika families who attended the evening. Guests heard from Nadeen Papalii, whose inspiring address encouraged reflection on how people navigate the world. She also highlighted how education opens doors, broadens horizons and helps turn aspirations into reality.

Board Chair Mr Wilkie also spoke, reaffirming the Board's commitment to ensuring Māori and Pasifika learners are supported, valued and empowered to achieve their goals.

Together, Samoan Language Week and the Māori and Pasifika Whānau Hui reflected the strength of the Macleans College community and the value of working alongside whānau to support young people. The events celebrated identity, connection and shared aspirations for student success.

A heartfelt fa'afetai tele lava to Principal Mr Hargreaves, Samoan students and everyone who contributed to the week. The warmth, pride and joyful chehoo! heard across the campus were a reminder that when cultures are honoured and shared, the entire community benefits.
