Macleans College hosts SGCNZ University of Otago Regional Shakespeare Festival

Over two hundred students came together on Sunday 7 April to celebrate the work of William Shakespeare, performing a selection of five and 15 minute scenes in Macleans College’s auditorium.

The audience was treated to The Merry Wives of Windsor meets 1950s housewife; a Gatsby-esque interpretation of Much Ado About Nothing and a raw unravelling of Ophelia’s sanity. Seven different colleges competed from Auckland South and East Region and Macleans College came away with second place in the 15 minute category for the student directed Romeo and Juliet, with its beautifully choreographed Ball scene.

Judges Jan Saussey and Dr Jane Luton praised the participants for the amount of hard work which had gone into their pieces and the imaginative interpretations of Shakespeare’s plays. Macleans College’s auditorium facilities impressed the colleges participating, offering a variety of lighting and sound options.

Special thanks go to Ms Appleby and Mrs Hunt for coordinating the festival and to Ms Burnett and Mr Davidson, together with their backstage crew, for making the day run so smoothly.

“The play’s the thing”.
