Macleans College footballers tour sunny Queensland

Posted on May 08, 2024

During the first week of the April school holidays, two Macleans College football teams, boys and girls, toured Queensland, Australia.

Comprised of 1st XI, 2nd XI and junior footballers, they played eight games in total of which unfortunately only one match was a victory. They came up against some strong footballing schools, all of which had some very large, successful football academies. One of the schools played were a boys national secondary schools finalist, and another school were the Queensland girls secondary schools champion. This provided an excellent challenge and experience for the talented and hardworking Macleans College football teams.

Four games in four days proved a very tough test for the footballers, especially in the warm and dry Queensland climate.

They also enjoyed a lovely boat cruise up and down the Brisbane river and attended an A-League football game between The Brisbane Roar and The Newcastle Jets where the group managed to feature on Australian television.

Other highlights on the trip was being taught a native Australian dance and how to throw a traditional hunting boomerang. The student footballers also enjoyed a day at Warner Brothers Movie World and a night watching an Outback-themed live show.

Students were able to share experiences with other students from another country. As well as creating better relationships with other Macleans College students which they may not normally interact with due to being in different year levels and whānau houses.
