Posted on May 13, 2025

The Macleans College Learning Support class recently visited the Auckland War Memorial Museum to deepen their understanding of Māori culture.

Accompanied by Mrs Bell, Mrs Liew and Mrs White, the students began their visit in the Education Room. There, they were taught the traditional weaving of the tukutuku panel. The session included explanations of the meanings behind Māori patterns, the structure of a marae and a storytelling segment featuring a traditional Māori legend. With guidance from the museum educator, the students concluded the session by performing the Macleans College haka, He Tāngata E Haka, with pride.

Following a shared lunch in the Kai Room, the group explored the Weird and Wonderful section, a hands-on area designed to showcase the wonders of the natural world. Mrs Liew then led a sketching activity, encouraging observation and creativity.

To conclude the visit, the students watched a performance by a Māori cultural group. This included a waiata and haka, followed by an informative presentation on taonga - treasured Māori objects and resources.

The students found the experience highly engaging and enriching.
