Recently the ESOL Senior Immersion students from Macleans College visited the WasteWise minimisation centre at Waitakere Refuse Transfer Station.

They learnt how to minimise waste and the impact it was having on the planet. They were shown different forms of packaging and discussed how items could be provided in different containers to avoid the plastic containers which are affecting the planet and animals, such as the sea life when the plastic gets into the ocean.

They were fascinated by the tiger worms and learnt why the food scraps are an important resource that the worms turn into ‘black gold’ (rich soil).

The students enjoyed using the exercycle which pumped water through the water tower as they cycled on the bicycle. It had been made from recycled items. The bus tour of the environment revealed an enormous amount of waste that is being produced by people. It was evident that with better choices we can, and must, preserve our planet.
