Top ten success at Auckland Schools Orienteering Sprint Championships
Posted on April 16, 2025
A group of Macleans College students recently competed in the annual Auckland Schools Orienteering Sprint Championships.
The championships marked the conclusion of Auckland’s school sprint series, which included five zone events: south, east, north, west and central. This year, the format saw a change with the addition of a park sprint at Barry Curtis Park.
After five weeks of competition, 37 Macleans College students qualified for the championship round. Top-performing students from across Auckland came together to test their skills in both the physical and mental challenges of sprint orienteering.
The championship race was split across two venues. The morning race was held at Macleans College, while the afternoon race took place at Saint Kentigern College. Although Macleans College students were familiar with the morning course, it remained demanding. The route included bush sections in Macleans Park, leading runners through unfamiliar tracks. Despite the difficulty, several Macleans College students placed in the top ten during the morning event.
The afternoon race at Saint Kentigern College presented a different challenge. The campus featured open, scenic fields but also complex areas, including multiple levels and complex courtyards. These elements made for a fun yet demanding course.
All Macleans College students completed the championship successfully. Several achieved exceptional results, placing in the top ten of their divisions.
- Junior girls: Tamsyn McCamish (Mansfield House) first place
- Junior boys: Shaun Cai (Snell) seventh place and Emery Cai (Snell) ninth place
- Senior boys: Malachi Teikamata (Hillary) fifth place, Charlie Bond (Batten) seventh place and Jeremy Ying (Hillary) 10th place
Sprint orienteering is a fast-paced, short-distance event. It is typically held in urban or park settings and requires quick decision making and accurate map reading while running.
