MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents
Some major highlights have occurred already during the first part of our school year.
New Zealand Selection for International Academic Olympiads 2017
Congratulations to Allen Hui (Kupe) and Janice Ho (Te Kanawa) who are part of a four-person team to compete in the Chemistry Olympiad in Bangkok and to our Deputy Head Boy Ben Zhang (Mansfield) and Elinor Wang (Te Kanawa) who will compete in the Biology Olympiad in London as part of their four-person team. What is also very pleasing about these selections is for the first time Macleans has two female students winning through to these very prestigious competitions.
The school congratulates the Science Faculty and the Head of Faculty Dr Ian Thomas and a senior chemistry and physics teacher Dr Allick Lal, who is closely involved in tutoring the teams, on these selections.

NZQA Scholarship Awards Ceremony at Parliament April 2017
Three students and family members attended the annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony in Wellington. Congratulations to Lucas Lee and Ben Zhang who won two of the ten Premier Scholar Awards (worth $30,000) that were presented for the 2016 examinations and to Kevin Shen who was Top in New Zealand in Japanese (top subject awards worth $6,000) and Ben Zhang who added to his Premier Award with the Top in New Zealand Subject prize for Physics.

Subject Tutoring in Year 13
This year we have initiated a programme of tutoring in as many examination subjects as possible. Students who are timetabled for studies during the school week are also enrolled in tutorials for extension and remedial work. It is hoped to resource this level of support for other year levels in coming years.
Macbeth
A modern re-telling of the classic Shakespeare play was staged by a cast of 35 students early last month.
It was outstanding and congratulations to the cast, crew and the Directors Mrs Jane Luton (Head of Faculty Drama) and Mrs Carleena Walsh (senior drama teacher) for overseeing such an innovative and brilliant production.

CATS
Once again the combined talents of staff and students have produced a top quality musical of the highest standard.
The support from the hundreds of parents, students, teachers and community members who came in great numbers to each night it was staged in the Colin Prentice Auditorium is appreciated and their overwhelming positive comments a testimony to the calibre of the music, singing, acting, dancing, make-up, costuming, lighting, sound and orchestra that we all witnessed.
Congratulations to all involved and particularly to the Music Director Mr Steve Miles, Mrs Jane Luton, Mrs Gina Miles and the numerous staff who made it all magically appear.
Cats
House Music 2017
As part of the ongoing inter-house competitions House Music has a special place and for a number of years now the quality of the signing, music and choreography has made it increasingly difficult for the judges to select a winner and place-getters.
This year’s Big House Choir Competition (with an average of 150-200 students from each house participating) was won by Mansfield, Snell were second and Batten third.
The Small House Choir Competition takes place on Friday 11 August.
The Boys’ Premier Basketball Team
Congratulations to the members of this team who won all of their games in a major pre-season competition to claim the right to a placement in the Greater Auckland Secondary Schools’ Premier Competition.
The last time the school had a team in this competition was 2001. Congratulations to long-time coach, Mr Adrian Boyd, the team and all involved, and achieving a win against Kelston in the opening game is no mean feat.
The Boys’ Premier Basketball team
The Girls’ Premier Netball Team
Congratulations in winning back a place in the Auckland Secondary Schools’ Premier Competition and well done to the team, the coach Mrs Kirsten Hellier and manager Mrs Nikki Seager.
Premier Golf
This team is congratulated on winning local Auckland inter-secondary school matches and a place in the upcoming National NZ Secondary Schools’ Championship finals. Well done to Mr James Fennelly their coach and to all the players.
The Premier Golf team
Boys’ Premier Football Team
Congratulations in retaining a place in the highly competitive Greater Auckland Secondary Schools’ Premier Competition after a 3-1 Home and Away result against King’s College.
Well done to the players, the coach Mr Michael Caley (Head of Faculty Commerce) and the long-serving manager Mr Steve Buckley (Head of Faculty Mathematics).
The Boys’ Premier Football team vs King's College
Good Sportsmanship and Sideline Behaviour
We ask please that all players and spectators involved with Macleans’ sports teams to actively support the school but to never denigrate our players or the opposition and their coaches, supporters and managers or the referees and umpires.
Your support is appreciated.
Careers Evening Tuesday 13 June 2017
All Year 12 and 13 students and their parents are warmly welcomed to attend the annual Careers Evening at Macleans.
This is always well supported and a wide variety of tertiary education institutions and a multitude of other career providers are present. Workshops and displays hosted by the respective organisations make it a very worthwhile evening.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Macleans College.

Traffic Information for Parents
Zero Tolerance
Drivers who stop in the wrong place to drop off passengers put the safety of children at risk.
Illegal parking includes:
- Parked on a broken yellow line - Parked across or within 1 metre of a vehicle entrance - Inconsiderate parking to other road users, including pedestrians - Double Parked - Parked on the footpath or grass verge/berm - Parked within a marked bus stop - Parked within 6 metres either side of an unmarked bus stop - Parked within 0.5 metres of a fire hydrant with no one in the car legally capable of moving it. - Parked within a designated bus lane, transit or cycle lane - Parked on a clearway - Parked on or within 6 metres of an intersection - Parked on a pedestrian crossing
We draw your attention to the following:
It is both illegal and impolite to park in or over other people’s driveways to drop off or pick up children. Vehicles must be parked 1 metre from any vehicle entrance.
Broken yellow lines mean NO STOPPING so dropping off or picking up passengers on these lines is illegal.
School drop off zones require quick turnaround. When using these – Stop, Drop and GO … to avoid waiting vehicles blocking the road. Children should be appropriately organised so as they can get straight out of the car so that other vehicles are not held up.
Children must not be let out of the car on to the road. This is dangerous behaviour and it is in fact an offence to carelessly open, leave open or close a car door. Children must be let out on to the footpath.
We continue to encourage parents to park well away from the school gate and allow their children to walk the last metres to school. Many schools have supervised crossings.
Use of Bus Turning Bay
This is restricted to buses only. For safety reasons we ask that parents do not drop off and pick up passengers using the bus bay.
Turning Right from Macleans Road into the Main Entrance
We request that vehicles travelling along Macleans Road toward Mobil Corner do not attempt to turn right into the main entrance.
Advanced Notice of School Donation 2018
The school donation helps pay for shortfalls in government funding to cover such items as class materials, curriculum related class trips, computer technology, library books, the school magazine, sports and cultural equipment, or any such purpose as may be approved by the Board of Trustees.
The Board of Trustees decided at the April Board meeting to increase the donation for 2018 to $590.00 per student.
The Board will take good care that the money paid by parents will be properly administered and be used for the purposes approved by the Board under its statutory authority, as determined by the Education Act.
Receipts will be issued on payment of donations. The donation is tax deductible.
The Extra-Curricular Activity Fees and Rebates for 2018 will be reviewed early in 2018.
Extra-Curricular Activity Fees and Rebates 2017
The Macleans College Board of Trustees believe that in the interest of fairness and equity for those parents who have paid the annual school donation, a rebate should be available on the fees charged by the school for extra-curricular activities listed below. This is in recognition of their valued support of both curricular and extra-curricular activities at Macleans College. The school donation for 2017 is $575.
