Dear Parents
The 2015 school year has well and truly started and we welcomed our new Year 9 students, a number of other levels and new staff to Macleans.
The roll is currently 2575 which includes 335 international students.
The external examination results were very encouraging at all levels and in all pathways and, once again, what is particularly pleasing is the depth and breadth of the success.
In the NZQA Scholarship examinations our students gained 131 individual Scholarships worth $500.00 each which included 22 at Outstanding level. Nine of the Outstanding Scholars from Macleans received $15,000 awards.
This is our best result over the 10 years since these examinations were started. We are the top co educational high school and third overall behind Westlake Boys’ High School and Auckland Grammar, with Wellington College in fourth.
We have started the year with a school-wide programme on writing essays. We have contracted an expert in the field Dr Ian Hunter to assist us further enhancing and emphasising this vital skill which has immediate and life-long benefits.
Our students will also have access to an on-line programme which will provide them with the prompts and guides to ensure they are able to take advantage of the techniques and with practice lift their confidence, marks and grades.
The extra-curricular life of the school is already in full swing and inter-school competitions in a number of sports have begun. Our school Championship meeting in swimming has been run and inter-school meetings will start soon. The major full school preliminary athletic meetings have concluded and the whole school is transported to the all-weather track at Lloyd Elsmore Park to watch hundreds of students take part in the finals.
The music, drama, dance and inter-cultural groups have also been auditioning and practicing in preparation for the array of performances they take part in throughout the year.
The Ministry of Education project to remedy the leaking buildings at the school is now in its seventh year and there are still a number of major rebuilds to be undertaken.
These include; Mansfield and Upham Whanau Houses, a completely new block housing the senior science laboratories and the technology practical rooms, the Auditorium and administration area, the Oliver Road toilet and shower block, the student toilets and the walkways. Te Kanawa House is part-way through a total reconstruction.
The school funded project adjacent to the Oliver Road Courts involving a full artificial turf hosting football and rugby and a revamped and expanded cricket oval, which will also be able to host football in the winter, will be completed this April.
Please remember to access our website for topical news of schools events and for an array of information about qualifications and other matters.
Thank you for your continued support of Macleans College.
Best wishes
Byron Bentley
Principal
