Kia ora parents and caregivers

Thank you for supporting the learning of your sons and daughters over Alert Levels 3 and 4. I know it has presented challenges and been very difficult for some students and families. It is reassuring to hear how well our country has done at minimising the impacts of COVID-19.

Today the Prime Minister announced that the country is moving into Alert Level 2. This means that Macleans College will be ready for all students to return to regular classes from Monday 18 May. Online classes will finish at the end of Thursday 14 and work will be set on Google Classroom on Friday 15 to allow staff to prepare the school for the return of students.

The Prime Minister advised that schools are safe environments for young people and staff and that additional public health control measures are in place to prevent the spread of disease and to support contact tracing.

Macleans has developed cleaning and sanitising procedures to comply with all public health guidelines so that it is safe for our students and staff to return to school.

We plan to welcome the students into their form classes at 8.30 am on Monday 18 May. The students will receive a briefing regarding hygiene practices and physical distancing and receive advice on where to seek support should they need it. There is security in following regular routines so we plan to resume most school routines as soon as possible.

Some further details about Alert Level 2 Schooling:

Hygiene practices

  • Any students and staff must stay at home if they are sick, and we will send anyone home immediately if they show any symptoms
  • Students will have hand sanitiser available in all classes
  • Any coughing or sneezing must be done into the elbow.

Physical distancing guidelines for schools

  • Students must not touch each other or be close enough to breathe on one another
  • Schools are exempt from mass gathering rules.

Sharing equipment

  • Students cannot share personal stationery
  • School equipment used by students will be sanitised regularly.

  • School buses will run but may have restrictions on capacity
  • Public buses will have reduced capacity.

  • The Commons kitchens will be closed for food preparation
  • The tuck shop and vending machines are open
  • Drinking fountains are closed so students must bring a drink bottle. It may be refilled from the tap in the Commons.

  • Winter or summer uniform may be worn until 29 May.
  • The school uniform shop will be open at Alert Level 2, from 2 pm to 4 pm on Thursday and Friday (14 and 15 May) and from 10 am to 12 noon Saturday (16 May).
  • John Russell Schoolwear will also be open at Alert Level 2 for school uniform purchases.

Extracurricular Activities

  • Information about extracurricular activities will be announced shortly.

We look forward to seeing all of our students on Monday 18th.

Kind regards

Steven Hargreaves
