Macleans College Media Studies Department had the pleasure of meeting Kamahl Santamaria (Kupe House 1993 – 1997) and hearing about his successful international journalism and broadcasting career.

Kamahl is currently a news presenter at Al Jazeera English. Most recently, he was the principal host of Al Jazeera's interactive newshour programme Newsgrid. In October 2018, the programme was nominated for an International News Emmy Award in New York, for an edition hosted by Kamahl on the Qatar-Gulf diplomatic crisis. Kamahl has presented hourly news bulletins, as well as the Newshour, and the panel discussion show Inside Story. He also hosted the channel's weekly business and economics programme Counting the Cost.

Media students benefited from Kamahl’s advice on potential pathways to working in the media industry today, professional advice on conducting interviews and effective ways of approaching their upcoming student documentary films.

Kamahl Santamaria is a past student of Macleans College and was the House Captain of Kupe House in his final year of school. He was pleased to be back visiting the school and was impressed at how the Media Department at the College has grown over the years, providing experiences and opportunities for students interested in a career in the media industry.
