Enrolment restrictions for 2024

Posted on May 03, 2023

Dear parents and caregivers

Enrolment applications for 2024 will open on 19 June 2023. For 2024 Macleans College will accept enrolment applications in Categories 2, 3, 4 and 5 at all Year levels. (A full description of the enrolment categories is given below). We will not be taking any enrolment applications for Category 6 – “all other applicants” – except at Year 13.

The main purpose of this letter is to signal that it is likely that there will be no places available in categories 3 to 5 in 2024.

  • Our expectation is that all current siblings (Category 2) will have an enrolment place in 2024.
  • Enrolment applications for past siblings, children of past students and children of school employees will go into a ballot that will be drawn on Wednesday 6 September 2023.
  • The number of places in any potential ballot will be determined at that time, once we have a firmer indication of in-zone enrolments, but our expectation is that there will be very few, if any, places available.

We find ourselves in this position because of the increase in in-fill housing in the Macleans College zone. The extra houses have increased our in-zone population and the number of students enrolling. We have approximately 100 more in-zone students on our roll than this time last year.

We are operating beyond what is deemed “100% capacity” for the Ministry of Education provided classroom spaces on campus. The Ministry only provides classrooms for in-zone students and does not allow schools to independently build classrooms for any out-of-zone students. The school is allowed to build classrooms to accommodate International Students using funds generated by International Students. We have used International Student funds to build classrooms to ensure no in-zone domestic student is denied a place at Macleans College due to insufficient classroom space. We are working with the Ministry of Education to build more classrooms to accommodate the forecast rise in the number of in-zone students.

We appreciate this likely closure of some of the out-of-zone enrolment categories will place some families in a difficult situation. The enrolment categories from which we can accept enrolments will be reconsidered each year. Due to in-zone roll growth the only way to guarantee a new enrolment at Macleans College is to live in-zone.

Out-of-Zone Ballot Categories

Category 1: Category 1 must be given to any applicant who is accepted for enrolment in a special programme run by the school (this priority does not apply to Macleans College).

Category 2: Category 2 must be given to any applicant who is the sibling of a current student of the school. (Applications accepted for 2024)

Category 3: Category 3 must be given to any applicant who is the sibling of a former student of the school. (Applications accepted for 2024)

Category 4: Category 4 must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school. (Applications accepted for 2024)

Category 5: Category 5 must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the Board of the school or a child of a member of the Board of the school. (Applications accepted for 2024)

Category 6: Category 6 must be given to all other applicants. (Applications accepted for Year 13 ONLY in 2024)

Yours sincerely
