2nd XV beat Selwyn College 24-10.
Soccer - Boys
1st XI v King's College
This was a must-win game for Macleans; a loss or a draw would mean automatic relegation but a win would leave all to play for in the last match of the season. Macleans had the better of the first ten minutes but fell behind after eleven minutes. Fortunately, they continued to play good football and, after excellent work on the right wing by full-back Timothy Crestanello, striker Sean Lovemore equalised with a shot past the goalkeeper from the edge of the area four minutes before the half-time whistle. The second half continued with both sides creating chances; Macleans’ captain Ahmad Al-Jawad headed onto the bar from a corner and Earl Crowley in the Macleans goal made a finger-tip save from Kings’ striker Spragg when a goal seemed certain. Macleans went into the lead half way through the second half with a scrambled goal from a corner, eventually poked home from two yards out by hard-working midfielder Jun Park. Macleans were unable to hold the lead for long; on the seventy-fifth minute, Al-Jawad was adjudged to have fouled a Kings’ striker in the box and Kings equalised from the resulting penalty. With just seven minutes of normal time remaining, Lovemore was put through again and made no mistake from twelve yards out. For the remainder of the match, Macleans held firm and recorded their second win 3-2 of the season; one that might just keep them in the A1 league for next year. The final match of the season is away against St Peters this coming Saturday 22 August at Waikaraka Park kick off 12 noon. A win for us (and a loss for Rangitoto v MAGS) would mean we finish seventh in the table and have to play-off against the second team in the A2 league in April. A loss or a draw would mean eighth and automatic relegation.
Soccer - Girls
The 1st XI girls played another great game of soccer on Wednesday night against a very evenly matched Westlake girls high school team. After many shots on goal at both ends of the pitch the result was still nil all at full time. During extra time neither team managed to find the back of the net and so a penalty shootout was ordered by ref. Henty. The girls unfortunately lost in this final test of skill. The team has finished their season 6th in the greater Auckland Premier competition, a fantastic result girls, you should be proud.
Netball
The Premier team played their final Auckland Premier College competition game against St Kentigern College to ascertain 5/6th position in this competition. The girls got off to a good start winning the first half of the game by three goals, The game tightened up in the second and we went down by four goals ending with a 31-35 loss. Well done for their performance throughout the season and good luck for the Upper North Island Tournament.
The Premier team played against Howick College and gained a 37-31 win. Great games by Sarah, Nicky and Bronwen in defence and Annaliese in Centre. The shooters were awesome in first half and had to work hard for every goal in the second half. Well played by the girls and a move two places up the ladder in the prestigious Auckland Secondary tournament is an awesome achievement.
Our Senior A defence team of Shyvon, Melanie and Paige had a great game. Playing against St Mary's we conceded only one goal in the first quarter. A lapse in the second quarter allowed St Mary's to score five goals. After the half time team talk there was a refocus and a strong finish. Final score Macleans 25, St Mary's College 9.
Our 10A team performed extremely well against Mount Albert Grammar to gain a 13 goal difference by the end of the match. The girls started strongly and had a 9-2 first quarter score which set them up well for the rest of the game. The final score was 28–15 to Macleans. Good luck girls in the final game of the season against Baradene which will see the top two teams of the championship play against each other.
Macleans 10B team showed great spirit in a nail-biting match against Diocesan who won by a single goal, 20-19.
9A team had a hard fought game against Sancta Maria. It was goal for goal all the way throughout the match. In the last quarter Sancta Maria were winning by six goals and with only four minutes remaining the Macleans girls kept their cool and worked hard to score a goal in the last 30 seconds to draw 21-21.
