Financial Literacy in Junior Commerce
Two hundred and seventy Year Nine and Ten commerce students have been learning how to become financially smarter.
The junior students involved have taken part in a programme to kickstart a lifetime of sound money-management.
The financial literacy programme is run by Savy, a group of volunteer students from the University of Auckland. Savy aims to promote good financial habits in all youth, regardless of their background or aspirations in life. The charitable trust is designed to enhance financial literacy by providing greater access to information and resources.
The Junior workshop runs like the 'Game of Life', whereby the students are split into groups and have to make financial decisions in each round. The underlying concepts encompassed in the Junior workshop are:
- Setting financial goals
- Income and how to manage it
- The financial consequences of decisions
- The importance of saving
The workshop is a great way to get students thinking about the importance of good money management.
