Competing in Samoa

Strength and technique in weightlifting has resulted in Macleans College senior student, Martin Pourtoossi, being selected to compete in the Commonwealth and Oceania Championships to be held in Apia, Samoa, next month.

Aged 16, he will be the youngest in the New Zealand team of 18 competitors and he is delighted to have been chosen.

He has also been awarded the Most Improved Weightlifter trophy by Olympic Weightlifting New Zealand. Last year he improved weights from 117kg to 153kg and he is currently lifting 172kg.

Martin has been in the Macleans’ weightlifting team for two years. He is a member of Rutherford House.
