The champagne flowed over the bows as two new boats were christened for the Macleans College rowing crews in the weekend.

Surrounded by rowers and parents, the boats were named after Mike Fitzgerald (left in the picture) and Terry Brown. Mike has been involved with the rowing team since its inception at the college when his eldest daughter rowed. Even though she finished years ago he has continued to put in countless <empty>

Terry Brown’s daughter also rowed for three years and he too has continued to put in countless hours helping with maintenance and driving boats to regattas.

The four was purchased thanks to a grant from the Perry Foundation while the cost of purchasing the eight was met by parental fundraising over an 18 month period. “If a student rower makes it into one of these boats, they will know they have done the work to be at the top,” said Head Coach Keith Hibberd.

The new boats will see their first official launching at the upcoming North Island Championships and then the Maadi Cup in Twizel the following week.
