Although he did a small amount of sailing in Switzerland, his skills have developed over the last year and now he is a crew member on a 35ft yacht. He had the opportunity to crew for a J24 class yacht but chose the larger 35 foot boat.
Hans has also been involved with the starting and finishing of races and being one of the crew in the committee boat.
He has been sailing during the summer and winter. “I have really enjoyed being on the water” Hans said. “The crew has been good to be with and
the whole experience has been fun. I have enjoyed playing rugby too and my time at Macleans has been awesome.”
Hans will return to Zug in Switzerland early next year where he will work before applying to study to become an aeroplane pilot. This will involve studying theory in Germany and practicals in the United States. He will return to Germany to complete the finals of the theory and practical examinations.
Macleans College introduced the yachting academy several years ago with increasing numbers each year wishing to be involved. (See the Sailing Academy website for more information).
The college, located in Bucklands Beach, offers extensive views of the gulf where many yachts are seen. This is why Auckland is known as The City of Sails.
