Macleans Junior Girls Underwater Hockey Team took home a bronze medal at last weekend's National Championships held at the West Wave Aquatic Centre in Auckland.
Achieving the status of the 3rd best team in New Zealand was even more remarkable with this being the first year Macleans have fielded an Underwater Hockey team, and with 7 out of the 8 girls never having played Underwater Hockey before.
The girls played in a series of gruelling games and proved they had the physical stamina and mental attitude of champions. They took the bronze medal out with a score of 2-1 after a sudden death play off.
Individual accolades were given to Alex Bayes who was selected for the National Junior Girls Tournment Team (a team of up to 10 girls recognized as the best New Zealand players in their grade) and in
addition was selected as MVP (most valuable player) in her team.
Alex was also selected for the under 18 Northern Region girls training squad (last year she made the final under 18 team) but has chosen to pass this opportunity up as the training camps will clash with her school rowing commitments.
